Lluch Wins Opener at Carolina Motorsports Park
KERSHAW, S.C. (March 26, 2006) – Defending series champion Edison Lluch out-ran his son and dominated the weekend as the American GT Challenge Series opened its 2006 season at Carolina Motorsports Park.
The elder Lluch won both 30-minute heats around the 2.235-mile, 14-turn road course. He broke his own record during the first heat, recording a lap of one minute, 32.891 seconds. It is the second straight year Lluch has won both heats at CMP in AGT competition.
“It just happens to be the first race of the year and we are well prepared” the winner said.
Lluch had to pass his son to get the lead about mid-way through the first race. The father led the son from start to finish in the second event.
Edison Lluch Jr. finished second to his father in both races.
“I knew it was him” the winner said. “I know he has the guts, the talent and the machine to win any race. I feel like a proud father. Winning is good, but racing against your son is the best”.;
The AGT scoring system combines the points for the two heat races and double-winner scored the maximum of 20 points. Lluch Jr. scored 18. John Finger, from nearby Greenville, and Jordan Bupp, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., each scored 14 points.
The younger Lluch is an AGT rookie, as are Bupp and McManus.
The weekend was a record-setting event for the series. Edison Lluch Jr. set an AGT track record in qualifying by turning a lap of one minute, 32.247 seconds (an average speed of 87.222 mph). The father broke his own race lap record in the first heat when he zipped around the venue in one minute, 32.891 seconds (86.379 mph).
