AGT Challenge Begins Key Two-Race Swing
MOSPORT, Ontario, Canada (May 15, 2006) – The drivers in the American GT Challenge racing series face a crucial two-week swing this month in the chase for the series championship.
The sports car series races twice in seven days and, while the season is still young, this will be the only time this season in which the series competes in successive weekends.
“A two-race span like this can really benefit a well-organized team,” said series founder Woodson Duncan. “Racing is about more than just the driver and back-to-back races really emphasizes the crewmembers of every team.”
The AGT Challenge races at Mosport International Raceway May 19-20 and at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut May 26-27.
The AGT Challenge brings together American muscle cars from several series through a set of rules that allows the cars to compete fairly. Purpose-built racing versions of Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaros and Corvettes and Oldsmobile Cutlasses thunder around road racing circuits in Canada, Puerto Rico and the United States in international competition.
All AGT Challenge events consist of a pair of heat races. The overall winner is the driver scoring the most points in the combined total.
Edison Lluch, the defending series champion and a resident of Puerto Rico, is up to his old tricks. He won both heats in the season opener at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, S.C. Lluch’s closest competition in the opener was his son, Edison Jr. The younger Lluch set a track record in qualifying and finished second to his father in both heat races.
Joey Scarallo, who was the overall points winner in the AGT race at Mosport a year ago, is expected to debut a new car at this year’s Mosport event. Scarallo (USA) finished the 2006 season opener ninth in points.
