Lime Rock Results Change Look of Championship
LIME ROCK, Conn. (June 6, 2006) – The American GT Challenge racing series championship standings has more movers than Mayflower. The neighborhood around the high rent district has changed and the kicker is that the newest residents are mostly familiar faces.
The AGT Challenge pits American sports cars from various series against each other in one competitive series. The Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros and Cutlasses eligible for the circuit come from SCCA GT1 racing, the now-defunct Trans Am series and the now-defunct AGT class of the Rolex Sports Car Series.
Defending champion Edison Lluch (Puerto Rico) has led the AGT Challenge standings since the season opening race, but his once comfortable lead has been narrowed by veteran driver Joey Scarallo (USA). Scarallo, who has won everything in sight over the last two AGT events, trails Lluch by just 10 points, 75-65, after three races. Scarallo started the season with a minimal score in the season opener but has charged up the standings into second place since then.
Other movers of note include Dave Machavern (USA), the former Rolex AGT champ, who vaulted from fifth to third in the standings after May’s race at Lime Rock Park, and Jack Busch (USA), who jumped from seventh to fourth. Mark Shaffer (USA) climbed from 12th place to seventh in the standings and rookie Jordan Bupp (USA) jumped four sports to eighth.
Charlie Webster (Canada) was the biggest mover of the weekend, bolting to 11th place from 17th.
Each AGT event consists of two heat races. The overall weekend winner is determined by combining the points earned through the weekend.
Machavern’s emergence as a championship contender is especially notable, as he is a veteran of title campaigns. He has scored a top 10 finish in every heat race this season. Lluch is the only other driver that can make the same claim.
The next race for the AGT Challenge is July 1 at Lime Rock Park and several streaks are on the line. Scarallo has posted the top qualifying speeds in the last two events, won four straight heats and two straight overall events. Lluch has a consecutive top 10 finishes streak dating back to 2005 and Machavern has done the same over first three races this season.
The AGT Challenge draws teams from all over the Americas and competes in three nations: The United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
