Lluch Wins AGT Race at Miller Motorsports Park

TOOELE, Utah, - Defending series champion Edison Lluch paced the field for much of the weekend and won round five of the American GT Inter-Americas Challenge at Miller Motorsports Park.

The Inter-Americas Challenge brings together American sports cars such as Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros and Cutlasses and holds races across four nations. An international field of drivers is in the running for this year’s championship.

“This is the finest track I have ever raced on,” said Woodson Duncan, president and founder of the AGT. “It’s pretty easy to see why there is such a buzz about this place.”

Lluch (Puerto Rico) drove a Corvette and established qualifying and race lap records in the series’ first visit to the track. He went on to earn the most points for the weekend.

All AGT events consist of two heat races. The driver scoring the most points in the combined total is declared the winner of the event. The win in Utah was Lluch’s second straight and third of the season.

After Lluch won the first heat race, his son, Edison Lluch Jr., won the second in another Corvette. It was the first heat race victory for the younger driver.

Mark Shaffer (US) posted his strongest AGT finish, second, and Roy Isley (Canada) made his initial foray into AGT competition a good one, finishing third. Edison Lluch Jr. (Puerto Rico) was fourth and Jerry Lustig (US) was fifth.

Lustig, who struggled to find speed early in the season, has steadily moved up in the standings since then. He said after the Utah weekend, ” am learning the car and sorting it out at the same time. The AGT is the place to race for these cars.”

Dave Machavern, who had been expected to mount a challenge for the lead in the championship standings at Utah, fell from contention in Utah after an engine failure. It was the second time this season that the popular veteran has been slowed by engine trouble.
